HRPPs and Assurances

A Human Research Protections Program (HRPP) is an institution's system of interdependent elements that implement policies and practices to protect human subjectsinvolved in research (IOM, 2002) External Link. In accordance with DoD policy, institutions conducting exempt or non-exempt human subjects research will establish and maintain a formal HRPP.

A DoD Assurance for the Protection of Human Research Subjects is a commitment by an institution to comply with DoD, Federal, and other applicable regulatory requirements while engaging in non-exempt research with human subjects. AHRPO negotiates new DoD Assurances and renews existing DoD Assurances for:

    • All U.S. Army, worldwide
    • Other Components and activities, as negotiated or directed
